The annual thread to show of your purchasing skills, or not.
More importantly, however, it’s a chance to give an insight into your thinking, and how your team was constructed.
I’ll start this off as I spent far too much money last year so only had a small amount to spend this year.
So, kicking off.
Superman López - had a poor season in 2019, probably not helped by having his first child just before the Vuelta. Probably the best pure climber in the peloton, he needs to up his game especially on the ITT. I’m a huge fan of how he races, loves to attack.
Gaviria - injured for much of the year, but on his day is amongst the very best. Has talent to burn, come on Fernando!
Higuita - my main target this year. Needed a big gun on a two-year contract, and Sergio has shown that he could have a great future. He sees himself as a Valverde, able to do stage races and one day too. From what he’s shown so far at such a tender age, it’s quite possible he could become a very good rider.
Teuns - showed a couple of years ago that he has it in him to be a big rider, I’m hoping he can show some of the form again from that amazing month he did.
Martinez - my second target of the year, either him or Sivakov. That was it, Higuita plus one or the other of them. Can TT and can climb. With Uran and Tejay’s flames dying both Dani and Sergio are in prime position to lead Vaughter’s team.
Tejay - the most boring rider who’s ever ridden a bike.
Gaudu - showed some serious talent last year, hoping for big things from the young Frenchman, an impressive youngster for sure.
Marezcko - fast, but scared of racing so it seems. The number of races where he’s been poorly positioned coming into the finale is just about all of them. He has the speed but needs to get a grip, if he does then he’ll win some races.
Remco - nothing needs to be said here. A superstar.
Ardila - my main Neo target, just check out stages 4 and 5 of the Baby Giro on YouTube. Hopefully the knee pain that kept him out of Tour de l’Avenir won’t be a hindrance. Has the ability to push a huge gear uphill and just ride away from the opposition.
Larsen - my second Neo pick, I didn’t think he’d still be available having won Denmark and a number of one-day races. Uno-X are also PCT this year so hopefully he’ll be their man man. A tough choice between him and Leknessund, who also appears to have a big future.
Osorio - has bundles of talent, scored nothing for me last year, but is highly rated and showed glimpses of class. Moving to Caja Rural should be a good thing for him at such a tender age.
A handful of signings should follow.
