The usual thread, always good to understand people's motivations for certain riders. I have one space left, Rivera may fill that space, but there are so many riders left that I won't mind if I'm overbid for him.
I decided to go for big Pete, he really should be able to do better than last year and give a good return. I wanted one solid rider and he's exactly that.
Last year I ended up with over 1 million unspent so this year I decided to take a risk on some rider I think will make a breakthrough, especially given I already had MVDP and Gaudu, as well as Garcia Cortina in the bank at good prices.
Trentin was my next main pick, at CCC he will work with Greg, and recent years have shown us that he's up there time after time.
I bid 1m for Sosa, 39 points last year didn't suggest this was a good idea, but I think the guy has talent to burn and heard he could possibly be leader at the Vuelta. Together with his talent in the hilly one-day races, this was a gamble I wanted to do.
Lutsenko, well he rides for , and seems to be taking a leaf out of Vino's book. And Olympics double race.
At 1m also, Ulissi doesn't seem to be a gamble. He quietly gets on with his own racing every year and scores loads of points. Not quite Zubeldia, but not far off.
Gaviria, what can I say, he's the fastest sprinter if he can stay on his bike.
I wasn't actually aiming for Demare, but couldn't resist at the price, especially as he appears to be riding the Giro and the Vuelta this year.
Hirschi was actually my main target, saw enough of him last year to think that he has a huge future. He'll play second fiddle to Matthews in some races, but Sunweb are weak, and Bling isn't as good a climber as young Marc. 700k sounds pricey, but it's money well spent IMO. Surely he'll be the Swiss for the Olympics too.
Then, as usual, very few seem keen on Dani Martinez, which surprises me. Vaughters has been bigging him up as EF's future along with Higuita. He's shown glimpses of class, but needs to put it together. At 500k I couldn't resist.
Then come the babies. I possibly overpaid for Hindley at 350k, but it's that Sunweb thing again. They have Wilco and Oomen, both of whom are regularly injured, so I wanted to get Jai and Rob Power, the latter at 100k IMO, is a bargain and a half.
McNulty, Power, Vlasov, Q Hermans and Steimle have been bought with a view to next year, whilst picking up some points this year, some more than others.
Ben Hermans, Cort, Dyball, Kudus and Rosa (at 50k???) have been bought to score more than their value.
Overall pretty happy, if Rivera joins then I'll be happy too with a view to the future, if he doesn't then I'll pick one of the others on my list of about 25 riders.
